Gone Girl - Movie Review (Spoiler Free)

I have had a fairly rocky relationship with David Fincher, he has made some of my favorite films (Fight club), but also a couple of duds (Seven). But this time he crafts a thoroughly entertaining thriller.

Gone Girl may start out simple enough, but its twists and turns are so deftly handled and tightly controlled, that it propels it into something more. A less skilled director, would have either let the entire thing unravel or would have given us a far more predictable movie.

And that's the films main strength is its unpredictability, that's strengthened by the films misleading marketing. There is not too much more I can say, but watching the mystery unravel is as entertaining as all hell and it feels like its over in no time at all. The cast also does an excellent job, with Rosamund Pike giving a career defining performance. The films themes also creepily twist there way into focus and give certain scenes an unnerving feel.

There are a fey missing elements that hold back the film but not by much. Due to films pulpy nature there are quite a few logic leaps and plot holes, that the film is well aware of, but due the films serious tone it never comes across as true satire. There is also one huge miscast, with Neil Patrick Harris doing the best he can and performing admirably, but ultimately he feels out of place and another actor could have been more suited to the role.

In the end, the films mystery and performances excel, its brilliantly crafted in all its pulpy glory. It also has a terrific score and nice moments of humour. but there are some elements that hold it back

Rating: 8/10
