Big Hero 6 - Movie Review

Large, funny, touching & inflatable.

Disney's Big hero 6 creates a colorful world, with smart likable characters and contains a touching gooey center, its just such a shame it has few punctures.

Lets start with Baymax who seems to be the embodiment of everything the film does so well. His charm, character and humour make him instantly lovable, combined with the emotional scenes he shares with the Hiro, which remain the high points of the movie. And in the end he ironically seems to be the heart and soul of this film.

Hiro isn't to bad either, with the filmmakers somehow fashioning a very down to earth and grounded boy genius. He's the reason why the films central story seems so relatable because his actions seems so familiar. When dealing with loss, he does what anybody would do and that's the reason why at times the film feels so fresh and moving.

Then we come to the supporting characters who are also introduced well, with each being distinct and memorable, even if they do remind me of the Scooby Doo gang. Each is introduced with a nice gimmick and great characterization, its just a shame that that is a far as they go. They are introduced and then dropped for what seems like half of the film and its annoying because it means that they never really feel like a team.

Next is the films main story and villain which seem surprisingly a bit bland and very predictable, but it doesn't matter as they are just a vehicle for the main character's arc, so i'm prepared to let it go.

It's when the sotry starts to really get going that the films great fault comes to light. The pacing is incredibly quick to a fault, especially as the 2nd and 3rd act seem merge into one. It roars along at a break neck speed, which is great as it keeps the excitement up, but it fails because it leaves behind so much of its characters and charm.

The incredible pace has two major consequences, the first being that it forgets to further develop the supporting cast and their formation as a team, it just happens so quickly and before you know it they are facing the final boss and it feels really under done.

The second consequence is that it fails to capitalize and linger on specific moments, it needed to slow down and at times let us look at the beautiful San Fransokyo, or to allow us feel specific moments, but instead the film often just plows right through with the next scene. And both just left me wanting more.

Overall the films heart and enthusiasm wins the day, creating some truly touching moments and some laugh out loud scenes. It just a shame it didn't slow down and smell the roses.
