Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation - Film Review

I thought it impossible to make a good 5th entry into a film series, but they have gone and pulled it off.

After a fairly hit and miss trilogy, Mission: Impossible returned surprisingly with the excellent Ghost Protocol, which set my new standard for action films. It was a fast, tense, exiting and funny globe trotting adventure that was only let down by a fairly lacklustre villain. And so Rogue Nation arrives with some pretty big boots to fill. It may need a few pairs of socks to fit snug, but the film feels like a worthy successor.

The main strength of Rogue Nation is its successful combination of the more espionage/thriller aspect of the original and the comedy/action sequence from ghost protocol. And annoyingly that's about as much as I can say. Its entertaining as hell with some truly good set-pieces, the Opera scene being a highlight that calls back to Hitchcock.

This time around they also fixed some of the problems that last film had, the villain is a noticeable improvement that feels like a true rival to Ethan Hunt. The only problem is that the film need a bit more of him to make him really memorable. Another slight disappointment though is the disappearance of Paula Patton from Ghost Protocol, although she is replace by Rebecca Ferguson who does a terrific job, its a shame the film couldn't have more than one Kick-ass female character.

In the end Rogue Nation is the epitome of a summer blockbuster, its loud, tense and funny in all the right places, it might be a bit too long and doesn't topple Ghost Protocol from being the best in the series, it comes damn close.

Rating: 8/10
